Raccoon tests positive for rabies in Indiana Township

A raccoon found in Indiana Township has tested positive for rabies, according to the Allegheny County Health Department.

The health department said the raccoon was brought to one of its facilities after being spotted near the 200 block of Little Deer Creek Road.

This is the seventh rabid animal reported in Allegheny County in 2019, including five raccoons, one cat and one bat.

Rabies is a virus transmitted by an animal bite or scratch. If a bite or scratch from a rabid animal is left untreated, the results are almost always fatal, health department officials said.

Residents are reminded to always avoid wild and stray animals. If any animal appears to be acting strangely or in a threatening manner, residents should notify their local animal control service, the police or the Pennsylvania Game Commission immediately.
