A water line leak has prompted crews to shut down the ramp that links the 40th Street Bridge to northbound Route 28 in Millvale, PennDOT officials said Monday night.

The ramp will be closed to traffic “until further notice” because of “safety reasons,” PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan said shortly after 10 p.m.

Drivers should follow posted detours and plan alternate routes based on their destinations, Cowan said.

PennDOT suggests the following detours:

• From the 40th Street Bridge, take the ramp to southbound Route 28 toward Pittsburgh;

• From southbound Route 28, take the 31st Street Bridge/Strip District exit (Exit 2) off-ramp, turn left toward the 31st Street Bridge and make an immediate left to northbound Route 28;

• Drivers also then continue northbound on Route 28 or take the Millvale exit (Exit 3B).
