Steelers appeal denial of advertising within Heinz Field seats |

The Steelers will go before the Pittsburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment on Thursday to argue for their plans to spell out Heinz Field or another name in the lower bowl of the stadium.

It’s not unheard for professional football teams or even college teams to paint words and logos on stadium seats. The Philadelphia Eagles have their screaming eagle logo painted on the seats at Lincoln Financial Field. The Denver Broncos have their horse head logo plastered on seats in the upper deck at Sports Authority Field. And at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, the University of Minnesota has “Minnesota” painted on the upper deck seats and its distinctive letter “M” logo painted on the seats in the lower bowl.

The Steelers are proposing to take that concept a step further with a plan to spell out Heinz Field, or perhaps that of an advertiser, in the lower bowl in the north end zone.

The problem for the Steelers is that they need the approval of the Pittsburgh zoning board after the city’s zoning administrator denied the Steelers permission to go ahead with the plan, said Nick Sero, a Steelers spokesman.

“We obviously disagree with that decision,” Sero said. “We’re just going to try and see if we can appeal the decision.”

Mayor Bill Peduto’s office declined comment.

“Right now, we’re going through the motions to see if we can do a special thing like put a logo or write something out into the seats. It could be a logo, it could be writing, it could be Heinz Field or Steelers or Pittsburgh. What that is yet, we don’t really know. All options are on the table,” Sero said. “This is the first step to see if it’s something that is possible. If it is, then next comes the step of ‘what do we do?’”
