Richard ‘Stretch’ Mickens

The suspect in Sunday’s double stabbing in Carnegie walked out the backdoor of a Scott home Wednesday morning and into police custody, authorities said.

Richard ‘Stretch’ Mickens, 58, is charged with homicide in the stabbing that left a man dead and a woman in critical condition.

The stabbing happened at about 7:30 a.m. at an apartment on Third Avenue, police said. A 31-year-old woman suffering from stab wounds ran to a neighbor’s home for help. Investigators responded, and 51-year-old Luke Connolly was pronounced dead at the scene.

County detectives issued a warrant for Mickens late Tuesday night, and a 5:30 a.m. tip Wednesday led them to a home on Spikenard Street in Scott, investigators said. The tip indicated that Mickens assaulted someone in the home with a knife and then fell asleep inside.

Police surrounded the home, and two people inside got out safely. Police took Mickens into custody when he went out the backdoor to let a dog outside, investigators said.

Mickens is charged with homicide, aggravated assault, rape, attempted homicide, unlawful restraint, reckless endangerment and making terroristic threats.
