Two Pittsburgh paramedics were injured while responding to a call Saturday afternoon, prompting a SWAT team response, authorities said.
The paramedics were responding to a medical call about 3:30 p.m. at a home on Windgap Avenue in the city’s Windgap neighborhood, according to Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV. The initial call was for a man asking for help for his mother.
Police told the TV station the woman refused treatment when medics arrived, and the man who had called 911 attacked them as they left the house. One paramedic was punched, and the other was knocked to the ground, WPXI reported. Both medics were taken to the hospital, but they were not seriously injured.
The man then holed up inside the home with his mother, prompting the SWAT situation, which ended about 7:30 p.m. when he was taken into custody, according to WPXI.
WPXI reports a fight ensued between the suspect and police officers, with two officers being injured.
Windgap Avenue was shut down in the area, and nearby homes had been evacuated.
