Swinburne Street in Pittsburgh’s South Oakland neighborhood will be closed for about five months as the city conducts repairs related to landslides, the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure announced Friday.

The $630,000 project will begin Oct. 21. Traffic will be closed in both directions between Greenfield Avenue and Edgehill Street/Childs Street on the Greenfield-South Oakland border.

Detours will be marked. Access to the Sestili Nursery will be available.

The project will include the construction of a wall and soil stabilization.

The Swinburne Street repairs are one of several projects totaling more than $8 million taking place across the city to tackle damage caused by record-breaking wet weather in 2018 and 2019, according to information provided by the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure.

Swinburne Street was closed several times earlier this year as city crews repaired damage from landslides and cleaned up debris following storms.

National Weather Service in Pittsburgh records show that 2018 was the wettest year on record for Pittsburgh.

Rainfall totals measured this month make 2019 the 14th wettest on record, according to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.
