Trailer for Pittsburgh-filmed Seth Rogen movie debuts online

The trailer for Seth Rogen’s latest movie, “An American Pickle,” which was filmed in and around Pittsburgh, debuted online Friday.

While the film is set in Brooklyn, it’s easy to spot Pittsburgh locations in the trailer.

From Liberty Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh to East Ohio Street on the North Side to Butler Street in Lawrenceville, Yinzers should easily be able to spot the local influence.

The movie was filmed entirely in and around Western Pennsylvania in the fall of 2018, with scenes shot in downtown Pittsburgh and Lower Burrell.

The film follows a struggling immigrant laborer, Herschel Greenbaum (played by Rogen), who falls into a vat of pickles in 1920. He gets brined for a century and emerges preserved in present-day Brooklyn. He discovers his only surviving relative, his great-grandson Ben Greenbaum (also played by Rogen), is a computer coder.

The movie, directed by Brandon Trost, was set to hit theaters but, because of the coronavirus pandemic, was moved to HBOMax, where it will premiere Aug. 6.

USA Today reports the filming process involved Rogen growing a full beard as the elder Greenbaum and shooting all of his scenes. A month later, a freshly-shaven Rogen then filmed all of his scenes as the younger — often returning to the same locations so that his younger character could be filmed sharing the screen with … himself.

“We essentially shot the whole (thing) twice,” Rogen said. “It was unique in that way.”

Rogen told USA Today that the beginning of the movie, set in Eastern Europe, has his character speaking in Yiddish.

“The entire opening act is in Yiddish, which is a very difficult language to learn and to perform,” Rogen told USA Today.

The movie also stars Sarah Snook, Jorma Taccone, Eliot Glazer and Kalen Allen.
