Vandals defaced a memorial plaque outside the home of Sue and Max Sciullo, parents of slain Pittsburgh police officer Paul Sciullo II, authorities said Monday.

The plaque memorializing their son, killed alongside two fellow officers in an ambush in Stanton Heights in 2009, is affixed to a railing on the Sciullo’s porch. Someone spray painted over it, authorities said.

Chief Scott Schubert said he was saddened to hear of the vandalism.

“It’s a shame that Paul gave his life protecting the City of Pittsburgh with his brother officers 10 years ago, to have somebody deface his memorial at the home of his parents, the son who they grieve every day,” he said.

Police are investigating.

The Sciullos told officers – who still drive past their Bloomfield home to check in on the couple – that they were hurt by the damage to the son’s memory, according to Public Safety spokeswoman Cara Cruz, and officers helped clean the plaque.

Anyone with information on the vandalism is asked to call Zone 5 police at 412-665-3605.
