Visitors to Pittsburgh International Airport will be required to wear masks or face coverings on all public airport property starting next week, Allegheny County Airport Authority officials announced Friday.
The requirement is part of a new “PIT Safe Travels” initiative and also applies to Allegheny County Airport in West Mifflin.
Airline travel volume has reached new lows during the coronavirus pandemic as business and vacation travel plans were canceled and governments around the world issued stay-at-home orders.
With some areas starting to open back up, including Southwestern Pennsylvania, Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said the authority is bolstering safety protocols to ensure passengers and staff are protected and the airports are ready for business.
JetBlue Airways, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines all started requiring passengers to wear masks in April.
Signs, floor markings and reconfigured seating will guide visitors to six-foot distancing in common areas at both airports, and protective shields will be installed in high-traffic areas like public counters, checkpoints and baggage claim.
Pittsburgh International Airport is using ultraviolet light to sanitize public areas, and frequent deep cleaning will continue in all public spaces.
