Temporary repairs to a waterline along Penn Avenue in Downtown that burst early Friday morning have been completed, according to the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority.

But Penn Avenue between Ninth and 10th streets will remain closed to traffic until later in the day, PWSA spokesman Nick Letzkus said.

“We’re not exactly sure when the street will be opened, so drivers may want to avoid the area today,” he said.

The break was in a line that feeds a fire hydrant, Letzkus said.

The street is expected to be closed down again on Sunday so permanent repairs can be made to the leaky hydrant line.

About 20 customers lost water service after crews shut off the water to do repairs on Friday. Service has been restored.

A cause for the break has not yet been determined.
