Pittsburgh City Council on Tuesday recognized First Lady Michelle Gainey and the Pittsburgh Black Elected Officials Coalition for their contributions to the city.

While reading a proclamation honoring Michelle Gainey, Council President Theresa Kail-Smith acknowledged Gainey’s work to bring local Black artwork into City Hall and her efforts to “promote one of her husband’s goals of making Pittsburgh a city for all.”

She also helps single moms with education and career planning as a consultant with the nonprofit Catalyst Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Black Elected Officials Coalition, founded in 2016, includes Gainey, County Council members Olivia Bennett and DeWitt Walton, City Councilmen Ricky Burgess and R. Daniel Lavelle and state Rep. Summer Lee.

“The (coalition) utilizes their collective power and authority to transform Pittsburgh African American communities into empowered, revitalized, healthy and sustainable neighborhoods,” Kail-Smith said, reading the proclamation.
