Pittsburgh officials are seeking $8 million in state funding for three streetscape projects.

Mayor Bill Peduto asked city council to approve applying for the grants Tuesday and council advanced legislation to that effect.

The city is seeking the money from the state Department of Community and Economic Developments Multimodal Transportation Fund to help fund the projects.

They include a project to improve South 21st Street on the South Side by adding trees, green infrastructure and improved access for pedestrians and to help manage stormwater.

The city is asking DCED for $3 million for the project, which would also include a local match of about $470,000 from Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority.

The other projects are a $2.2 million Second Avenue Streetscape project in Hazelwood and a $2.9 million Centre Avenue Streetscape project in the Hill District.

On Tuesday, council advanced the legislation without comment.
