Pittsburgh crews working to clear city streets after Sunday's snow
Crews have been working around the clock to clear Pittsburgh streets after Sunday’s snowfall, Mayor Ed Gainey said.
About 3 inches of snow fell by 9 p.m. Sunday, and another inch was expected during the day and into the evening Monday.
Gainey said crews worked continuously overnight and would work throughout the day Monday to clean snowy roadways.
Emergency services are ready to help any residents in need, the mayor said.
“I want to urge all Pittsburghers to slow down and drive with caution,” Gainey said. “Now is also the time to check on your neighbors and elders to ensure they have everything they need to stay warm and safe.”

Gainey reminded residents that they are expected to clear the sidewalks in front of their homes. He encouraged people to consider becoming “snow angels” and volunteer to shovel sidewalks and driveways for neighbors who can’t do so themselves.
Gainey has said that the city’s snow removal efforts will improve as he hopes to learn from previous snow storms and reinvest in the Department of Public Works. Crews took several days to clear the city’s roads after a major snow storm last week.
Temperatures are expected to remain cold, with Monday’s low temperature expected to be 7 degrees and the high temperature climbing just to 33 degrees. Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing through Wednesday.
The city’s warming shelters — located at Homewood Healthy Active Living Center, South Side Market House Healthy Active Living Center, Greenfield Healthy Active Living Center and Sheraden Healthy Active Living Center — will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays when temperatures drop below 20 degrees.
