Police in riot gear walk out of the Capitol, Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, in Washington. As Congress prepared to affirm President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, thousands of people gathered to show their support for President Donald Trump and his claims of election fraud.

Federal agents in Pittsburgh said they are not aware of any violent threats in the region as rumors circulate online about attacks before the presidential inauguration in specific cities.

In addition, an individual in the Pittsburgh area was named in the weekend’s federal report that warned of possible further violence, according to Special Agent in Charge Michael Christman. He said local agents “contacted the source of the report.”

“Subsequently, the Pittsburgh-based individual cited in the report was interviewed by FBI agents,” Christman said in a statement. “At this time, we are not aware of any threats in our region.”

That includes not only Western Pennsylvania but West Virginia as well.

“The FBI takes all threats seriously and fully investigates each threat,” he said.

Christman said his office continues attempts to identify people who were part of the violence in Washington, D.C. last week, and agents are working with federal prosecutors.

“Our mission of protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution is dual and simultaneous, not contradictory,” Christma said, noting the bureau targets those who violently co-opt peaceful protests.

The riot outside the U.S. Capitol – during the certification of Joe Biden’s presidential victory over Donald Trump – left five people dead. A Capitol police officer died from injuries sustained when rioters forced their way inside the building, and a woman was shot to death by an officer. Three others suffered fatal medical emergencies.

“While the FBI does not comment on investigations, as a matter of course, we utilize a number of investigative tools to pursue any lead that will further our investigation,” Christman said.
