Pittsburghers play and swim at Magee Pool in Pittsburgh’s Greenfield neighborhood on July 12, 2024. The city instituted a chaperone policy for Ormsby Pool on the South Side.

Kids ages 15 and younger will need adult supervision at Ormsby Pool in Pittsburgh’s South Side.

Pittsburgh officials said the new policy goes into effect Saturday following “repeated violations” at the outdoor pool.

Anyone 15 or younger must be accompanied by an adult age 21 or older. Chaperones will have to show identification as proof of age, city officials said in a statement, and they’ll be responsible for ensuring any minors in their supervision abide by pool rules.

Pittsburgh last year implemented a similar chaperone policy at Highland Park pool after a fight broke out there early last season. The aquatics staff at Highland Park requested the chaperone policy last year, city officials said, citing concerns with large numbers of unsupervised minors.

City records last year showed a fistfight among dozens of teenagers, the use of pepper spray and threats with a gun were among a string of violent incidents at Pittsburgh’s public pools.

For this summer season, Pittsburgh opened 16 public pools on June 16. Homewood and Sheradon pools will remain closed this summer for renovations.
