Pittsburgh International Airport is prepared for the onset of this weekend’s major snowfall, spokesman Bob Kerlik said.

Passengers are advised to check with their airline for the latest on their flight status before arriving at the airport. Flight updates can be found online at flypittsburgh.com.

“We’re seeing preemptive cancellations from a number of carriers already,” Kerlik said.

The airport is in constant contact with the weather service and airlines, Kerlik said.

“Our snow crews will be onsite around the clock throughout the weekend. Our snow clearing equipment is ready to go and our de-icing materials are loaded and ready,” he said.

“Similarly, the aircraft deicing crews will be fully staffed and ready to go as planes must be de-iced before takeoff.”

Those planning to travel Sunday or Monday are also advised to allow for extra time in getting to the airport.

According to the National Weather Service, the heavy snow is expected to begin falling in Allegheny County between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. Sunday, moving south to north across the region.

A total of 9 to 14 inches of snow is expected.
