Pittsburgh looks to expand lease for police headquarters for 6 years

Legislation introduced to Pittsburgh City Council on Tuesday would extend the city’s lease for its police headquarters site in the North Shore for six more years.

The proposal includes a more than $1.3 million annual price tag for the Western Avenue space each year.

The city sold the last police headquarters building that it owned in 2002, and the site has since been converted into a parklet near the Boulevard of the Allies ramp and PNC’s corporate building, said Maria Montaño, a spokeswoman for Mayor Ed Gainey.

Montaño could not immediately provide information about whether the city has plans to purchase or build a city-owned headquarters for the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.

The city has been leasing its existing police headquarters space since 2002.

City officials had previously pitched the idea of including a new police headquarters at a sprawling public training facility that had been proposed in the city’s Lincoln-Lemington neighborhood. That project, however, has stalled as city officials have said they don’t have the funding or an exact price estimate on a project they estimate would cost well over $100 million.

The legislation to expand the police headquarters lease was introduced to council Tuesday with no discussion. The measure could be ready for a preliminary vote as early as next week, with a final vote as soon as the following week.
