A Pittsburgh man is facing misdemeanor charges after illegally entering the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 attack and entering the conference room of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, officials said.

Thomas Carey, 21, communicated with four other men beforehand to coordinate their plans and then all illegally entered the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Three others are facing misdemeanor charges along with Carey, officials said.

One of the five defendants, Joseph Brody of Virginia, is facing felony and misdemeanor charges in connection with the assault of law enforcement officers and other actions during the insurrection, officials said.

According to court documents, Carey and the four other men moved throughout multiple levels, corridors and rooms of the building, including the office and conference room of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. After about 35 minutes, the group exited the building and moved to the north end of the Capitol, witnessing the breach of the North Door of the building, officials said.

Carey was arrested Sept. 15 of this year.

The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. The U.S. Attorney’s Offices for the Western District of Pennsylvania provided assistance, as did other regional offices. Pittsburgh’s FBI field office participated in the investigation.
