Black and gold with a nod to Pittsburgh’s bridges — this year’s Pittsburgh Marathon limited-edition running shoes lean into the city’s identity.
The shoes – a custom Brooks Glycerin 23 in black and yellow – pay tribute to Pittsburgh’s skyline with images of the city’s buildings and bridges.
“With bridges and landmarks on each foot, every step is an ode to Pittsburgh,” said a post on the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon’s Facebook page.
Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon (P3R), the nonprofit organization that creates and manages the Pittsburgh Marathon, partnered with Seattle-based sports equipment company Brooks Running for the collaboration.
“From the colors to the design details, every element celebrates Pittsburgh’s spirit and the excitement of race weekend, giving runners a shoe that’s both performance-ready and full of city pride,” said Paxton DePoe, event marketing coordinator at Brooks Running in a news release.
There have been nine previous Brooks x Pittsburgh Marathon shoes developed so far, but Troy Schooley, P3R CEO, said this year’s shoe has been the “most Pittsburgh” of Brooks Running’s designs.
“We’re very fortunate though that a couple of the people (designers) are actually from Pittsburgh and are very familiar with not only the Pittsburgh Marathon, but what we love here,” Schooley said.
The shoe will be available at select Dick’s Sporting Goods locations and online.
Runners and fans can also purchase the limited-edition shoe in person during Marathon Weekend at the Dick’s retail space inside the Pittsburgh Live Well Expo presented by GNC.
While Schooley could not provide an approximate total for the number of shoes sold each year, he did say that the shoes have consistently sold out.
Dick’s has been a title partner of the Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events since 2021, according to P3R’s website.
P3R organizes up to 20 major events every year. And has worked with the Pittsburgh Steelers, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the National Senior Games, according to the website.
Last year, an estimated 23,000 runners participated in the Pittsburgh Marathon and half marathon, as previously reported.
Registration for the Pittsburgh Marathon on May 2-3 is currently open online.
