Pittsburgh Mayor-elect Ed Gainey announced during a virtual press conference Monday that he has tested positive for covid-19.

Gainey said he tested positive after taking a rapid test in the morning. He was holding a virtual press conference to announce his transition team.

Gainey said he was exposed to the virus Saturday and asked for a rapid covid-19 test during a physical at his doctor’s office Monday morning. He said he was asymptomatic and did not have a fever.

“It wasn’t the first time I had been exposed,” he said, though he had tested negative after prior exposures.

Gainey said he was awaiting results from a PCR test, which should be available within 24 to 48 hours.

Gainey said he received a booster dose of the covid-19 vaccine in November and everyone on his transition team is fully vaccinated. He takes office in January.
