Pittsburgh officer hit by vehicle during police pursuit involving stolen car, 4 suspects in custody
A Pittsburgh police officer suffered head injuries Saturday after being hit by a car that had been reported stolen, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety.
According to police, reports of the stolen vehicle were received around 10 a.m. A license plate reader detected it entering the department’s Zone 1, which covers several North Side neighborhoods.
Soon after that, the reported stolen vehicle and a second vehicle were seen driving through the police department’s Zone 1 parking lot off of Brighton Road in the city’s California-Kirkbride neighborhood.
People in both vehicles were masked and they were honking their horns, police said.
Officers tracked the vehicles to Federal Street and Lafayette Avenue. As officers tried to get out of their vehicle, one of the suspect vehicles hit an officer and continued to flee, police said.
The officer suffered head injuries described as moderate and went to a hospital, police said.
Police spiked one of the two vehicles near the 10th Street Bridge but it continued to flee. It went onto the Boulevard of the Allies and Grant Street, where multiple people got out.
Officers apprehended four at the scene, police said. It was not immediately clear how many in total were in the vehicle.
The second vehicle was found abandoned on Brutus Way in Sheraden, police said. No suspects were found there.
Police were continuing to investigate.
