Pittsburgh property owners are set to get a bit more time to take advantage of the tax discount offered to early filers.
Mayor Corey O’Connor and City Council members want to extend the deadline for the 2% property tax discount by one week, to February 17 from February 10.
Officials wanted to push back the deadline “due to the disruption of mail service that we experienced during the snowstorm,” Councilwoman Erika Strassburger, who serves as council’s finance chair, said Wednesday.
Council members were unanimously supportive in a preliminary vote Wednesday.
They are on track to give the measure final approval next week.
The massive snowstorm that struck the region last week dumped about a foot of snow on Pittsburgh.
Residents saw delays in mail drop-off and pick-up throughout the city, with some people going up to five days without mail service, said Jennifer Gula, who heads the city Finance Department.
The discount will apply to people who pay their property taxes online by February 17 or whose mailed tax payment is postmarked by that deadline.
The discount applies to people who pay their taxes in full or pay the first installment of their annual tax bill by the deadline, the mayor’s office said in a statement last week.
