A Pittsburgh Public Schools student has died after being struck by a vehicle in Pittsburgh’s Carrick neighborhood.
District officials said the deceased girl is Ishara Kami, 17, a senior at Carrick High School.
Police responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian accident at about 2:50 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Brownsville Road and West Woodford Avenue, Public Safety spokesperson Eliza Durham reported.
Police said a vehicle reportedly driving down Brownsville Road began sliding before hitting a pole. The vehicle continued sliding and struck Ishara, who was standing on the sidewalk.
Police said the driver remained on scene. The investigation is ongoing.
Pittsburgh EMS paramedics performed CPR and transported Ishara in critical condition to a hospital, where she later died.
District officials released a statement about the incident and their sympathies for the girl’s family and community.
PPS leaders described Ishara as “a beautiful student who had recently begun to come out of her shell. A student in the Health Tech program, she was known for her kind spirit, helpful nature, and the genuine care she showed to others. She was well loved by her peers, an all-around good student, and a true joy to have in class.”
They went on to say the district is coordinating with school leadership to provide counseling and support services to students and staff.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Ishara’s family, friends, classmates, and the entire Carrick school community during this incredibly difficult time,” district officials said.
