Pittsburgh's South Side Flats could get new sports court for basketball, pickleball
Plans are in the works to build a sports court for pickleball and basketball in Pittsburgh’s South Side Flats.
The court would be located on the East Lawn at SouthSide Works.
Plans presented Tuesday to the city’s Planning Commission call for a 10-foot fence around the court, as well as a bike rack, benches and a new sidewalk, said Teresa Bucco, principal with Pittsburgh-based architectural firm AE7.
“Currently, the site is a vacant grassy lot with a lawn,” Bucco said.
The site would be at the easternmost portion of Tunnel Park, according to plans presented to commissioners. The site connects to Hot Metal Bridge on the east and Three Rivers Heritage Trail on the weeks and is between parts of the American Eagle corporate offices and the Ingot parking garage.
“We’re excited to offer it as another activation down here in the South Side,” said Chris McCune, vice president of construction and development with South Side-based real estate developer SomeraRoad.
McCune said he anticipates there would be some type of online reservation system through the SouthSide Works website, but details on how reservations for the court will work are still being finalized. The court would be able to accommodate either basketball or pickleball, and the sport being offered could alternate depending on the day of the week, he said.
Commissioners didn’t comment on the proposal Tuesday. It could be up for a vote as soon as the commission’s next meeting in two weeks.
