Oakmont police Sgt. Jack Eaton has called it a career after nearly three decades in law enforcement.

He served the borough for the past 27 years as a patrolman and later sergeant.

The lifelong borough resident, Riverview High School and University of Pittsburgh graduate was on the Verona police force part time prior to becoming full time in Oakmont.

Council accepted Eaton’s retirement at this month’s voting meeting. The sergeant has been away on vacation and was unable to attend the session.

Council President Patricia Friday said they plan to formally recognize his years of service at a meeting next month.

Oakmont Police Chief Michael Ford said Eaton was an outstanding officer who wore many hats including negotiator, firearms instructor, crime prevention officer and drug task force member.

He was promoted to sergeant in May 2014 and ran the department in Ford’s absence.

“Sgt. Eaton will be missed,” Ford said. “He took a vested interest in the safety of the citizens of Oakmont. He could often be seen walking foot patrol on the boulevard and through Riverside Park.

He made it a point to go the extra mile during his investigations, and followed up with people — not just the paperwork. He had established many relationships with the community throughout his years of service.”

Eaton could not be reached for comment. His last official day is Aug. 30.

Oakmont has six full-time officers, including the chief, and between five to eight part-time officers available.

People interested in becoming Oakmont officers can contact the borough office at 412-828-3232.

2 firefighters welcomed

The police department says goodbye to one of its long-standing members while the fire department is preparing to welcome two new recruits.

Council accepted the applications of Anthony Sengelson and Seth Merryman as volunteer firefighters.

Fire Chief David Carroll said it will take a couple months before they officially become members and are sworn in by Mayor Christopher Whaley.

Carroll said their applications are part of the process to get them covered by the department’s insurance and start training. Anthony will become a junior firefighter and Merryman a member once proper paperwork and procedures are complete.

The fire department has about 22 active members. Anyone interested in becoming a firefighter can call the station at 412-828-3134.
