Oakmont Hometown Christmas 2018. The Oakmont Chamber of Commerce kicked off its 2018 holiday season officially on Saturday, Nov. 17 with the traditional holiday parade, live entertainment, food trucks, carolers, and of course, the arrival of Santa!

Christmas comes early in Verona and Oakmont as the boroughs get ready for a grand celebration.

Oakmont Chamber of Commerce presents its Hometown Christmas and parade Nov. 23. The event is from 4-8 p.m.

What began more than 50 years ago as a kickoff to the holiday shopping season has grown into a family-friendly tradition.

“It’s just the whole small town atmosphere people love,” said Karen DeTurk, chamber executive director. “They just love to come and visit. Whole families gather here. It’s become a tradition among most Oakmont residents. We’re just looking forward to it and hoping for a good night.”

Allegheny River Boulevard in Oakmont will be closed from Pennsylvania to Washington avenues.

Pittsburgh-based Greater Pitt Tree Service is the main sponsor.

There will be a 50/50 drawing, Chinese auction, and about 80 vendors including crafters, nonprofit organizations and local businesses participating. A highlight of the festivities will be the traditional Christmas tree-lighting ceremony.

Other activities include performances by Greater Harmony Chorus, a dance troupe from Kelsey’s Dance and Fitness Center, St. Irenaeus Preschool carolers and Redeemer Lutheran School singers.

Children will receive free cookies and candy canes while visiting Santa at the Oaks Theater.

DeTurk said planning for Hometown Christmas has gotten a lot easier.

“This event has been going on so long that it kind of runs itself,” DeTurk said. “They know when it is because it’s always the Saturday before Thanksgiving. People call me regarding performing on stage. I don’t have to call people.”

More than 100 participants and 15 floats are expected to take part in the parade. It starts at 5 p.m.

Lineup is near the Verona Borough Building along East Railroad Avenue.

The route travels into Oakmont via Allegheny River Boulevard.

Police and firefighters from both boroughs will be in the parade. Grand prize is $200 for the best float.

Verona Mayor David Ricupero plans to drive a gingerbread house float for St. Joseph Catholic School.

“I think it will be a good thing,” he said of the celebration. “Hopefully, they get a lot of people. I’m all for it. It brings families together.”

The parade grand marshal is musician Bill Deasy. A parade judge has yet to be named.

People can still sign up to be a part of the parade. Deadline to enter is Wednesday, Nov. 20.

Vendors can sign up, too, but they have to be a chamber member. Vendor registration deadline is Nov. 8.
