Human skeletal remains found in Boyce Park
A hunter found human skeletal remains Saturday morning in a wooded area at Boyce Park in Plum, officials said.
Authorities were alerted to the hunter’s discovery shortly after 9:30 a.m., an Allegheny County 911 shift commander said.
Detectives with the Allegheny County Police homicide unit were called to the scene, according to Lt. Venerando Costa.
The skeletal remains — which have not been identified — were taken to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office in Pittsburgh’s Strip District, Costa said.
The medical examiner will attempt to determine who the remains belong to and the person’s cause and manner of death, Costa said. It’s unclear how long that might take.
Officials did not immediately provide further information about the remains, such as any indications whether they belonged to a man or a woman, how old the person was or how long they may have been there.
Allegheny County Police told Trib news partner WPXI-TV they could not specify a timeframe but estimated the skeletal remains appeared “to have been in the woods for some time.”
The remains were found about 100 yards from Spring Miller Road in a wooded portion of Boyce Park, just past a sign directing visitors to the park’s soccer fields and picnic groves. The county-run park spans about 1,096 acres, most of which is in the borough of Plum.
