Plum appoints junior council member
Plum Council voted on Aug. 11 to appoint a new junior council person to the body.
Jacob Landis, a Plum High School student and Junior ROTC member, was unanimously appointed to the position.
He will have the right to speak and ask questions at meetings, but Landis cannot vote on measures. He’ll begin his term at council’s September meeting.
Plum allows large bike race to use borough road
Plum Council voted to allow a September bike race to use a portion of Renton Road, under the condition that race organizers pay the overtime of police officers required to monitor the event.
GFNY’s Pittsburgh-Monroeville race will begin and end just south of Plum in Monroeville after an 80-mile circuit throughout Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.
In addition to Renton Road, the race will utilize several other Plum roadways, but these are maintained by PennDOT and did not require the council’s permission to use.
No roads will be closed for the race. It’s set for Sept. 21.

Construction begins for Oakmont dog park
Dog owners in Oakmont will soon have a green space to take their pets.
Construction began last week at the site of Chateau Beach Dog Park along Allegheny Avenue, borough officials said. The 1-acre park is meant to give dogs a space where they can roam off-leash, something otherwise prohibited in the borough.
Once completed, dogs will be allowed to play and run. A 6-foot-high chain link fence will surround the park, and the facility will be locked each night.
The park will include separate areas for small and large dogs. A gravel lot will be available for parking.
In total, the cost of the dog park is estimated at just over $200,000.
Council President Nancy Ride said neighbors were informed of the construction’s start.
According to a social media post from the borough, the park is anticipated to open six to eight weeks from the start of construction.
A Paris Affair
Higgins Productions will be hosting the first annual Paris Affair at the Riverside Landings Event Center in Oakmont.

Tickets for $75 to a VIP reception starting at 4 p.m. are available to purchase at parisaffairpgh.com.
The event will continue annually around the Pittsburgh area. It was invented to showcase the beauty in each business and to create meaningful connections in the area.
