Plum AARP sets October meeting
Plum AARP will hold its October meeting at noon on Oct. 14 at Unity Community Church.
Hot dogs, chips and coffee/tea will be offered for $3. The entertainment will be the Hi-Lites, performing oldies and country music.
Plum AARP is a social/service organization open to residents of Plum, Penn Hills, Monroeville and surrounding communities. Newcomers are welcome to attend regular meetings, which are at noon on the second Tuesday of each month except June.
AARP features a speaker or entertainment at almost all of its meetings. Two hot dog lunches are offered per year, as well as a Christmas party, spring luncheon and August social.
Members also have an opportunity to sign up for single-day or multi-day trips through Thomas Tours, which sends a representative to every meeting.

Plum to host fire safety presentation
Plum will host a community event with Deputy Fire Marshall Donald Brucker, who will offer tips for lithium-ion battery use.
The batteries are often found in electronics, power tools and e-bikes.
Set to begin at 6 p.m. on Oct. 9, the event will take place at the Plum Municipal Building.
Plum Trunk-or-Treat
Plum’s trunk-or-treat celebration is set for Oct. 22. from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Costumed children will parade through the parking lot at the Plum Borough Building and stop at decorated cars to receive candy and other treats.
Adults must register each child who will attend the event. Registration at plumlibrary.org opens on Oct.6 at 10 a.m.
Pre-Halloween ghost stories event on tap
A Campfire Ghost Stories event is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Four Seasons Activity Center at Boyce Park, 901 Centerview Drive.
Bring a chair or blanket for this free event sponsored by the Allegheny Parks Department.
Attendees can wear a costume for a chance to win a prize.
7th Light & Unite memorial scheduled
The seventh annual Light & Unite memorial to mark Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at The Stables at Hartwood Acres Park, 200 Hartwood Acres.
The memorial is open to bereaved parents, their loved ones and anyone affected by pregnancy loss.
There will be a petting zoo, live music, a craft for children, raffle baskets, a light buffet dinner, a dessert table and hot cider.
The barn setting also will provide therapeutic interaction with small farm animals, as well as a bonfire lighting for the International Wave of Light, a worldwide candle-lighting and remembrance ceremony.
The event will be outdoors so attendees should dress accordingly.
Tickets are $50 for adults, $25 for children 10 to 18, $10 for ages 5 to 10 and free for those younger than 5.
Ticket sales will close at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 10.
Sponsorships ranging from $250 to $5,000 are available. Basket donations also are welcome.

Plum High School named “National Banner Unified Champion School”
Plum High School recently earned the status of National Banner Unified Champion School, a recognition offered by the Special Olympics organization.
The school earned the nod for its unified sports programs, which include students with and without disabilities.
Those programs include unified bocce, track and Special Olympics basketball.
Local businesses painting Oakmont pink
Local realtor Lori Hummel is helping organize an ongoing Paint Oakmont Pink fundraising event in October that will benefit Glimmer of Hope, a Pittsburgh-based breast cancer foundation that fights breast cancer through research, programs and studies.
The event will partner with local businesses, Hummel said. Some of them will haves special products.
Oakmont Candle Works will be selling a pink candle throughout the month. Oakmont Bakery is selling a pink cookie. Oakmont Skin Care and Electrolysis LLC will also be putting out a product. Local Remedy Brewing will be selling a pink beer. A portion of proceeds will be donated to Glimmer of Hope, Hummel said.
Aside from special products, the fundraiser includes an Oct. 15 gala at The Lot. The Oaks Theater will host a screening of the movie “Pretty in Pink” on Oct. 21.

First aid class open to community
The Riverview Community Action Corporation is hosting a First Aid Training Class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Riverview Community Center, corner of Second Street and Delaware Avenue in Oakmont.
Participants will learn about first aid basics; medical, injury, environmental and opioid-associated emergencies; and preventing illness and injury.
The cost is $50 per person. There is no residency requirement to participate.
The class will be taught by members of the Lower Valley Ambulance Service.

The American Heart Association’s First Aid Program is designed for anyone with little or no medical training who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting or for those who need a course completion card for their job, regulatory need such as OSHA or other requirement.
RCAC plans open house
Riverview Community Action Corporation is hosting an open house from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at its center, 501 Second St., Oakmont.
Attendees can mingle with community leaders and chat with members of the RCAC team.
There will be live keyboard entertainment by Janet Knapp Graham, a charcuterie from Pickles & Pancetta and cookies from Oakmont Bakery.
No reservations are required, and everyone from the surrounding communities is welcome to attend.
Parking is available at St. Paul Baptist Church, 180 Delaware Ave.
RCAC’s activity center offers a monthly lunch menu as well as fitness, education and social activities to adults 60 and older.

Plum Class of 1985 to hold reunion
Plum’s Class of 1985 will host its 40th class reunion on Nov. 28 at Veltre’s Wedding Venue on Coxcomb Hill Road.

Group offers support for weight loss
All are welcome to join the men and women at Oakmont TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) who are learning how to lose weight.
With in-person meetings, rewards, support and encouragement, we gain knowledge of healthy eating and exercise.
You may visit with no obligation Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1261 Pennsylvania Ave. in Oakmont. Weigh-in is private followed by a brief business meeting, sharing time, and educational program all ending by 7:15.

Food pantry offers help
The Plum Food Pantry, 81 Sandune Drive, distributes free food from 4:30 to 6 p.m. the first three Tuesdays of each month for Plum residents. Residents in need must stop in at the pantry to be certified/verified.

Association of University People
The Association of University People invites singles 50 and older who are four-year college graduates to join them for activities and to meet new people. Activities include spring/summer picnics, monthly dinners, a book group, Scrabble, meeting up at local outside concerts and wineries.
