Putt Away Cancer

Included in the series of events making up the Paint Oakmont Pink fundraiser, a Putt Away Cancer event will be hosted on Oct. 2 in businesses along Allegheny River Boulevard and Allegheny Avenue.

Participants are able to register ahead of time for preferred tee times or, starting at 4 p.m. that day, people can show up to Oakmont Olive Oil to register and pick up a course map. Holes will be set up in different businesses throughout the borough’s business district.

Teams ranging from one to four golfers may participate. A suggested donation is $5 per golfer or $15 per foursome. A round takes roughly 40 minutes to complete with a four-person team.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to Glimmer of Hope, a nonprofit that supports research and care for breast cancer patients and survivors.

Riverview purchase

Riverview school board members approved the purchase of an almost $10,000 high jump mat for the athletics department.

The new mat will replace one that was damaged during the April storms and was was deemed unusable.

According to district business manager Sheila Lubert, the purchase will be completely covered by insurance.

Oakmont Presbyterian Church Family Fall Fest

Oakmont Presbyterian Church officials are kicking off fall with a bang.

Members of the public are invited to the annual Family Fall Fest on Oct. 4. Starting at 1 p.m., families can enjoy pumpkin painting, cookie decorating, crafts, games and “blessing bags” at the church on Pennsylvania Avenue in Oakmont.

Plum AARP sets October meeting

Plum AARP will hold its October meeting at noon on Oct. 14 at Unity Community Church.

Hot dogs, chips and coffee/tea will be offered for $3. The entertainment will be the Hi-Lites, performing oldies and country music.

Plum AARP is a social/service organization open to residents of Plum, Penn Hills, Monroeville and surrounding communities. Newcomers are welcome to attend regular meetings, which are at noon on the second Tuesday of each month except June.

AARP features a speaker or entertainment at almost all of its meetings. Two hot dog lunches are offered per year, as well as a Christmas party, spring luncheon and August social.

Members also have an opportunity to sign up for single-day or multi-day trips through Thomas Tours, which sends a representative to every meeting.

Pre-Halloween ghost stories event on tap

A Campfire Ghost Stories event is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Four Seasons Activity Center at Boyce Park, 901 Centerview Drive.

Bring a chair or blanket for this free event sponsored by the Allegheny Parks Department.

Attendees can wear a costume for a chance to win a prize.

7th Light & Unite memorial scheduled

The seventh annual Light & Unite memorial to mark Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at The Stables at Hartwood Acres Park, 200 Hartwood Acres.

The memorial is open to bereaved parents, their loved ones and anyone affected by pregnancy loss.

There will be a petting zoo, live music, a craft for children, raffle baskets, a light buffet dinner, a dessert table and hot cider.

The barn setting also will provide therapeutic interaction with small farm animals, as well as a bonfire lighting for the International Wave of Light, a worldwide candle-lighting and remembrance ceremony.

The event will be outdoors so dress accordingly.

Tickets are $50 for adults, $25 for children 10 to 18, $10 for ages 5 to 10 and free for those younger than 5.

Ticket sales will close at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 10.

Sponsorships ranging from $250 to $5,000 are available. Basket donations also are welcome.

Local businesses painting Oakmont pink

Local realtor Lori Hummel is helping organize an ongoing Paint Oakmont Pink fundraising event in October that will benefit Glimmer of Hope, a Pittsburgh-based breast cancer foundation that fights breast cancer through research, programs and studies.

The event will partner with local businesses, Hummel said. Some of them will haves special products.

Oakmont Candle Works will be selling a pink candle throughout the month. Oakmont Bakery is selling a pink cookie. Oakmont Skin Care and Electrolysis LLC will also be putting out a product. Local Remedy Brewing will be selling a pink beer. A portion of proceeds will be donated to Glimmer of Hope, Hummel said.

Aside from special products, the fundraiser includes an Oct. 15 gala at The Lot. The Oaks Theater will host a screening of the movie “Pretty in Pink” on Oct. 21.

First aid class open to community

The Riverview Community Action Corporation is hosting a First Aid Training Class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Riverview Community Center, corner of Second Street and Delaware Avenue in Oakmont.

Participants will learn about first aid basics; medical, injury, environmental and opioid-associated emergencies; and preventing illness and injury.

The cost is $50 per person. There is no residency requirement to participate.

The class will be taught by members of the Lower Valley Ambulance Service.

The American Heart Association’s First Aid Program is designed for anyone with little or no medical training who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting or for those who need a course completion card for their job, regulatory need such as OSHA or other requirement.

Plum Class of 1985 to hold reunion

Plum’s Class of 1985 will host its 40th class reunion on Nov. 28 at Veltre’s Wedding Venue on Coxcomb Hill Road.

Group offers support for weight loss

All are welcome to join the men and women at Oakmont TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) who are learning how to lose weight.

With in-person meetings, rewards, support and encouragement, we gain knowledge of healthy eating and exercise.

You may visit with no obligation Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1261 Pennsylvania Ave. in Oakmont. Weigh-in is private followed by a brief business meeting, sharing time, and educational program all ending by 7:15.

Food pantry offers help

The Plum Food Pantry, 81 Sandune Drive, distributes free food from 4:30 to 6 p.m. the first three Tuesdays of each month for Plum residents. Residents in need must stop in at the pantry to be certified/verified.

Association of University People

The Association of University People invites singles 50 and older who are four-year college graduates to join them for activities and to meet new people. Activities include spring/summer picnics, monthly dinners, a book group, Scrabble, meeting up at local outside concerts and wineries.
