News briefs: Greek Food To-Go event on tap; leaf collection set; food drive scheduled

The Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church at 12 Washington Ave. in Oakmont is having a Greek Food To-Go event from noon to 7 p.m. Oct. 24 and 25.

There will be a limited menu with gyros and pastries.

Leaf collection scheduled

Plum’s leaf collection program started Oct. 13. Each neighborhood’s collection day is the day after trash pickup.

There will be no leaf collection Nov. 11 and Nov. 26-27.

Do not rake leaves into flower beds and/or landscaped areas. Rake to the back of the curb and not the street.

The collection program is scheduled to end Dec. 4.

Food drive planned

A Thanksgiving food drive is planned for Nov. 1-16 at Rev 22 powered by Salud Juicery, 527 Allegheny Ave. in Oakmont.

People can donate goods Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Items needed include flour, sugar, canned pumpkin, canned sweet potatoes, box stuffing mix, cereal, canned vegetables and fruits, baking spices, turkey gravy, canned cranberry sauce and other nonperishable goods.

The drive benefits the Rosedale Food Pantry, which serves more than 700 families each month from Penn Hills, Plum, Oakmont and Verona.

Glass recycling event on tap

PA Resource Council’s traveling glass recycling bin will be parked by the Boyce Park soccer field along Pierson Run Road in Plum from Oct. 24 to 29.

Glass bottles, jars and jugs will be accepted.

Cut glass, glass bakeware, mirrors, porcelain and ceramics, stemware, light bulbs and TVs will not be accepted. The site is under video surveillance.

The recycling bin visit is sponsored by the borough, CAP Glass and Owens-Illinois.
