Katelyn Goodman of Carnegie is sworn in as a new Oakmont police officer by Mayor Christopher Whaley.

Oakmont police recently welcomed a new officer.

Katelyn Goodman, 24, of Carnegie was sworn in by Mayor Christopher Whaley at last week’s council meeting.

This is her first police job, having just graduated from the Allegheny County Police Academy in June.

Whaley said Goodman was highly recommended by her instructors.

“My initial impression is she is level-headed and has a real passion for this career,” the mayor said. “Being a police officer is really more of a calling than a career. I hope being a part of our department helps to build upon the foundation she has and helps her succeed in her career.”

Goodman went through a thorough background investigation and interview process prior to being hired.

“She believes in community oriented policing and believes in engaging with the citizens, which is a good fit for the Oakmont community,” police Chief Michael Ford said.

Goodman is one of two women currently on the borough force. Officer Fawn Zakor has been with Oakmont since November 2011.

Oakmont has seven full-time officers, including the chief, and between five to eight part-time officers available.

Two other part-timers were briefly mentioned at the council meeting. Whaley said council needs to ratify their hiring.

“We are always accepting applications for part-time police positions,” Whaley said. “Every municipality who (relies on) part-time officers is struggling with recruitment and retention.”

People interested in becoming Oakmont officers can contact the borough office at 412-828-3232.
