A race in Oakmont designed to raise money for trail and park projects is about to hit the half-century mark.

The borough recreation board’s 50th annual 5K run is set for Saturday at Riverside Park.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the pavilions in the lower section of the park. The race starts at 9 p.m.

“I think running has increased over the years in popularity,” said MaryAnn Provenza, recreation board secretary. “I think the interest and parent volunteers and the support of the community (has kept the race going).”

About 150 runners are expected to take their places at Third and Archie streets.

The race route then goes left onto Pennsylvania Avenue, across the railroad tracks, onto Allegheny River Boulevard and through the borough’s business district, left onto Plum Street and left on to Dark Hollow Road. A cone will be setup along Dark Hollow Road for a turnaround back to Riverside Park.

Provenza said they do not have a fundraising goal this year. The board raised about $5,000 at last year’s race.

The 5K had several names throughout its history, from the Twin Boro 5K run when it went into Verona, to the Mello Yello race when the citrus soda pop was a major sponsor.

One year, the race was started by a borough official hoisted high in a bucket truck with a starter pistol. The run nearly ended before it began.

“He almost fell out of the bucket truck,” Provenza said. “It’s not funny, but it’s funny when you describe it. The big thing was to start it off with a bang.”

She said participants should not expect to see something like that this year.

Prizes will be given to the top three runners in various age categories. Other categories include first overall male and female, first resident and parent/child team.

Entry fee is $20. Proceeds benefit Creekside Park trail development.
