There were pies and spirits in the sky Aug. 23 at a Riverview Band booster fundraiser.

Hundreds of apple, pecan, blueberry and other slices of pastries were served at the seventh annual Pie Night at Riverside Park in Oakmont.

“The weather’s perfect,” said Wendy Wilton, band booster president and event coordinator. “Last year, it rained and we had it inside. It’s a nice community event.”

The theme of the night was “Guardians of the Galaxy,” with songs selected from the hit Marvel movie’s soundtrack.

Riverview High School marching band played Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky,” Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” and the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back.”

More than 50 pies, some homemade and others store-bought, were available at $3 per slice.

Desserts were served by band parents such as Sanya Hart.

“It’s a chance to fundraise, a chance to be with the community,” Hart said. “It’s a very family-oriented atmosphere.”

Hart’s daughter, Nya, is a senior and a member of the Raiderettes dance team.

Former Raiderette Louisa Miguez graduated last year. Her father, Lawrence Miguez of Oakmont, made it to Pie Night.

“I come back and I support it,” Miguez said. “I enjoy the games, and the band’s great.”

Various band apparel was also on sale. The event raised about $1,500.

Wilton said the money goes toward uniforms, equipment and other band expenses.

About 120 students are in the band, led by Director Joe Perrino.
