A 2-year-old girl died Thursday afternoon after drowning in an East Pittsburgh pool, police said.

Police and first responders were dispatched to a pool in the 500 block of Howard Street shortly after 1 p.m.

Kehlani Russell was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital where she later died at 2:22 p.m., according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner.

Police said the drowning death appears to be accidental.

Eastern Regional Mon Valley police — whose officers patrol East Pittsburgh, Rankin and North Braddock — declined comment and deferred all questions to Allegheny County Police.

County police said the victim’s name needs to be released by the medical examiner’s office.

“This appears to be accidental in nature,” police spokesman Jim Madalinsky told TribLive. “Everyone is cooperating. We have no further information to share at this time.”

About 15 homes dot the 500 block of East Pittsburgh’s Howard Street, a mostly residential road located about a block off Route 30.
