Two carjacking suspects were arrested Monday afternoon after crashing the vehicle police said they stole and trying to run from authorities — triggering a manhunt that shut down the 31st Street Bridge and snarled traffic on nearby Route 28.
Stowe police reported a carjacking around 3 p.m. and called in backup from other agencies during a subsequent car chase, authorities said.
The driver of the stolen car hit a vehicle near the 31st Street Bridge, then fled the scene on foot, according to Eliza Durham, a Pittsburgh police spokesperson.
Pittsburgh police, paramedics, SWAT teams and River Rescue members all responded to the scene.
Paramedics tended to the driver of the second vehicle, who was not injured, Durham said.
Authorities closed the 31st Street Bridge, which spans the Allegheny River and connects the city’s Strip District and Troy Hill neighborhoods, as they searched for the suspects.
Two men, whom police did not name, were taken into custody. No charges have been announced.
Stowe Police are investigating the initial incident.
