Police: ATV rider shot at sheriff's deputies in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill
Two Allegheny County sheriff’s deputies came under fire Thursday night during a confrontation with two ATV riders in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill South, police said.
Sheriff Kevin Kraus said the two uniformed deputies were in an unmarked car about 10 p.m. when two men on two all-terrain vehicles sped by.
He said the men made eye contact with the deputies, and one began circling the deputies before both riders took off.
Deputies caught up with the riders near the intersection of Beechwood Boulevard and Douglas Street, where both riders had stopped. Kraus said one man remained on his ATV in the middle of the street while the other was parked on the sidewalk and off of his vehicle.
Kraus said that as deputies pulled up and got out of the car, the man on the sidewalk “started backing up and began shooting at the deputies.” The deputies returned fire, he said, and both men took off on one ATV, leaving the other on the sidewalk.
Pittsburgh police are investigating the incident and the deputies’ use of force.
There was no indication whether either of the men were struck by gunfire, Kraus said. He said he put out a notice to hospitals in the area to be on the lookout for anyone coming in with possible gunshot wounds.
“We had a couple cases, but they were determined to be unrelated to our case,” he said.
Both of the deputies were unharmed, he said.
Police said the ATV was last seen turning right onto Loretta Street from Lilac Street heading toward Greenfield and Hazelwood.
