A boy was rescued from a house fire Saturday evening in Crafton Heights when a neighbor climbed onto the second floor and helped the boy through a window, police said.

First responders were called to the fire in the 1100 block of Fredonia Street around 4 p.m. When they arrived, they saw the man and boy on the porch roof with heavy smoke coming from the window, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety Spokesman Maurice Matthews.

After placing a ladder up to the roof, firefighters escorted them down.

The boy was transported to Children’s Hospital in stable condition for smoke inhalation. The man refused treatment.

The Fire Investigation Unit will determine the cause of the fire.
