A Pittsburgh man was arrested in early Tuesday after Pittsburgh police say he fired a gun near West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield.

Officers said they were responding to a report of shots being fired on Milgate Street just after midnight when they heard a gunshot as they approached the hospital. Police said officers were waved down by a bystander who told them that a man with a gun was headed toward a gas station in the 4700 block of Liberty Avenue.

Officers said they found the man, Rodrick Dent, 40, of Bloomfield, and he assaulted officers and reached for his firearm as they tried to detain him. Police said they tased Dent to help officers take him into custody.

He was charged with aggravated assault, strangulation, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, making terroristic threats and discharging a firearm.

He was denied bail and taken to Allegheny County Jail, according to court documents.
