Police said a reported grenade that prompted evacuations on Pittsburgh’s North Side was actually an inert training device — essentially just the outer casing with no explosive material.

“It looks like the actual device but there’s no pin or gunpowder that would cause an explosion,” said Eliza Durham, a police spokeswoman.

On Wednesday, officers from the Zone 1 station and the police bureau’s bomb squad responded to the 500 block of East Ohio Street for reports of a grenade on a porch around 11:35 a.m.

Pittsburgh police briefly evacuated some buildings after the report.

The bomb squad later determined it was not a live device.

Dunham said it appeared that “someone left it there on accident, and then wandered away.”

By approximately 12:15 p.m., those evacuated were allowed to return.

Police are continuing to investigate.
