Pittsburgh police say gunshot victim flees pursuit, later dies in hospital
Police are investigating after they say a gunshot victim fled from them and later died in a hospital Tuesday night.
Police said they responded to a reports of a shooting at the 500 block of Frayne Street in Pittsburgh’s Hazelwood neighborhood just after 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. They said they found a man with what they believed to be a gunshot wound at the scene.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office later identified the man as Maurice Cole, 21. The medical examiner’s report did not disclose where Cole lived.
Cole got into a vehicle and fled, police said. Because of Cole’s injuries, police pursued the vehicle until it stopped in traffic on the Homestead High Level Bridge.
Officers then approached the vehicle and performed first aid on Cole until paramedics arrived. He was transported to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where he died a short time later.
Detectives from Major Crimes and the Crime Scene Unit responded to investigate the incident.
A discarded firearm was recovered at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
