A crash early Monday on Pittsburgh’s Fort Duquesne Bridge led police to a woman wanted on attempted homicide charges stemming from a shootout in Hazelwood last year, court records show.
Ronika Carter, 33, is accused of giving state troopers a fake name following the crash around 12:30 a.m. Police said they determined her true identity, discovered she was wanted, and then found a 9mm handgun in the car.
It was not immediately clear whether Carter was in custody Tuesday. State police could not immediately be reached to clarify.
Carter was wanted in connection with a June 11, 2021, shooting in which she and a man were wounded.
A criminal complaint said Pittsburgh police had initially responded to Flowers Avenue for a report of a shooting and found Carter with a gunshot wound to her chest.
Camera footage from the area showed a woman identified as Carter standing next to the open passenger door of a vehicle. Police said she was wearing a distinct white hoodie with a pink rabbit design, from which she pulled a firearm. She and a man struggled over the gun and Carter shot him in the chest, the complaint said.
As Carter ran from the scene, police wrote, the man she is accused of shooting returned fire.
Carter and the man both were taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries.
Carter was charged with aggravated assault, attempted homicide, reckless endangerment and weapons violations.
