Police: Teen burglarized Hazelwood home, then returned and assaulted women there
A Homestead teenager faces charges after police said he burglarized a Hazelwood home on Wednesday afternoon and then returned to the home and assaulted two women waiting there for police to arrive.
Jason Bethune-Curry, 15, is charged as an adult with multiple counts of burglary, robbery and aggravated assault.
A criminal complaint filed in the case said two children were in a home on Ladora Way shortly after 1 p.m. when they heard the rear window of the home shatter. The children said they saw a man they identified as Curry running from the backyard, police said.
The children called the adults who live in the home and the adults called police around 1:15 p.m., according to the complaint. The two women came home and discovered a brick had been thrown through a window.
One woman said she went to sit on the back porch to wait for police. As she did, Curry and three other suspects rushed into the yard and knocked the woman to the ground and pinned her, according to the complaint. Police said the other woman came outside to help and was immediately attacked. She said one man pointed a gun at her head, according to the complaint.
The women said the men repeatedly asked her where her boyfriend’s Glock was, according to the complaint. One woman told police that her boyfriend had recently turned 21, got his license to carry a firearm and bought a gun, the complaint said.
One of the unidentified suspects went into the home and confronted a child inside, police said. The complaint said that man raised his pistol as though to strike the girl, at which point she said, “I don’t think you want to do this.” The girl said the suspect went through the home looking for the gun before the men fled.
One of the women called 911 to report the assault. An officer wrote in the criminal complaint that he received a report of the assault at 2:41 p.m. and noted that the original call had been pending since 1:18 p.m.
Another officer spotted Curry a short time later, and an officer brought the two children to the area to identify him, according to the complaint. Both girls said they were certain that they saw Curry at the home, the complaint said.
Investigators said they are still working to identify the three other men who were with Curry.
Curry was taken to Allegheny County Jail on Thursday after failing to post $25,000 bond. Court records did not list a defense attorney. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
