The Monongahela Incline in Pittsburgh will be shutdown from April 28-30 to allow for a state inspection.

Commuters using the Monongahela Incline to ride up and down Mt. Washington in Pittsburgh will have to take another route next week when the incline shuts down for three days for an inspection, Port Authority Transit said Thursday.

An incline shuttle bus will provide service to and from Mt. Washington from April 28 to 30, while the state Department of Labor and Industry conducts its seven-year inspection, PAT said. The popular railway connects Grandview Avenue with East Carson Street at Station Square on the South Side.

The shuttle bus service will start and end each day at the same opening and closing times as the incline does — 5:30 a.m. to 12:45 a.m.

Because of the simultaneous weeknight Mount Washington Transit Tunnel closures for a separate construction project, the inbound incline shuttle routing and the lower station temporary boarding stop will change at 8 p.m. each night until end of service.

To standardize outbound — the uphill — incline bus routings, the Wabash Tunnel will operate in outbound mode only, all day, each day, for the duration of the project.

The inspection, delayed from 2020 because of the covid restrictions, will test and verify loads and hauling capabilities of the incline cars, cables, structures and associated pieces of hardware, the Port Authority said in a statement.
