The Rachel Carson Bridge is slated to close weeknights beginning Monday.

The closures, which will not occur in inclement weather, will last from 8 p.m. till 6 a.m. The overnight closures are expected to last at least two months as crews install enhanced lighting on the span, according to Allegheny County officials.

Traffic will be detoured using Fort Duquesne Boulevard, the Andy Warhol Bridge and Isabella Street. Pedestrians will still have access to one open sidewalk throughout the closure.

Once crews finish work on the Rachel Carson Bridge, they’ll begin installing enhanced lighting on the Andy Warhol Bridge. That bridge also will see overnight closures while lights are installed, though the county said a start date for those closures has not yet been finalized.

Officials expect to begin installing improved lighting on the Roberto Clemente Bridge later next year. The bridge is currently closed for rehabilitation work and is expected to reopen next December.

The sister bridges, which link Downtown Pittsburgh with the North Shore, will have tens of thousands of LED lights installed on their towers and suspension cables.

The project, which the county announced in August, comes with a $6 million price tag. The federal government is funding 80% of the project, with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation paying 15% and the county providing the last 5% and paying the cost to operate the lights.

The LED lights will be able to display different colors for various times of the year.
