A blood drive will be held Thursday in memory of a North Braddock teen who died last year from leukemia.

Nichole Hogan died on Jan. 7, 2022, a week after being diagnosed with her illness. She was 13.

The American Red Cross will hold the blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Richard L. Ferguson American Legion Post 527, 401 Draper St., East Pittsburgh.

“I’m humbled by how the North Braddock community has rallied around this wonderful family and their righteous cause,” said Jorge Martinez, CEO of the American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania.

“To think that just one hour of your time can give hope to a family fighting a similar battle and even potentially save a life is meaningful and impactful,” he added.

Martinez said he will donate blood during the drive.

“I’m honored to join Nichole’s family to pay homage to her life and spread the word about how critically important blood donations are,” he said.

The Red Cross reported a shortfall in donations in May, collecting 26,000 fewer blood donations than necessary to meet the needs of patients.

The public can donate during the event by scheduling an appointment at RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

Everyone who gives blood, platelets or plasma in June will receive a $10 gift card by email to a merchant of their choice. They also will be entered for a chance to win a backyard theater package.
