6 with Pittsburgh ties make Forbes' 2024 billionaires list

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper is among the world’s most wealthy people, according to Forbes.

Several people with Pittsburgh ties have been named on Forbes’ World’s Billionaires List, which was released Tuesday.

David Tepper, 66, tops the local connections tied at No. 94 with an estimated $24.6 billion in net worth, according to Forbes.

In 2003, he donated $55 million to Carnegie Mellon University, from which he graduated with an MBA, and the business school is named after him.

Tepper, the president and founder of the Appaloosa Management hedge fund, was raised in the Stanton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh and graduated from Peabody High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Pitt and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon. A former minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tepper now owns the Carolina Panthers.

Mark Cuban, 65, who grew up in Mt. Lebanon, came in 563rd with an estimated net worth of $5.4 billion by the magazine.

He made his fortune with the sale of broadcast.com in 1999 for $5.7 billion, Forbes reports. He owns a minority stake in the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and is the founder of a company seeking to lower generic drug prices.

Maggie Hardy, 58, of Rostraver came in at No. 775 with an estimated $4.1 billion in net worth. She’s the owner of 84 Lumber, which was founded by her father, and Nemacolin resort in Fayette County.

Ron Burkle, 71, was listed at No. 1,104 with an estimated net worth of $3 billion. He is the former owner of the Penguins and formed investment firm Yucaipa in 1986, earning big bucks while selling large supermarket chains, according to Forbes. The Penguins were sold in 2021 to Fenway Sports Group for around $900 million, according to reports.

Burkle tied with Thomas Tull, 53, of Pittsburgh. Tull founded Legendary Entertainment, a film production company which sold for $3.5 billion. He stepped down from it in 2016 and now focuses on his Tull Investment Group. Tull owns a minority stake in the Steelers.

Michael Rees, 49, came in at No. 1,851 with an estimated net worth of $1.7 billion. Bloomberg reported Rees is a Pennsylvania native and he attended the University of Pittsburgh, according to Forbes.

He started Dyal Capital which has since merged with Owl Rock Capital. He is now co-president of Blue Owl Capital.

There are now 2,781 billionaires worldwide, a record number, worth an aggregate $14.2 trillion, according to Forbes. The U.S. has 813 billionaires, followed by China with 473. India is third with 200.

According to Forbes, the richest person in the world is Bernard Arnault and family with an estimated net worth of $233 billion. Arnault, 75, of Paris oversees 75 fashion and cosmetic brands including Louis Vuitton and Sephora.

Forbes says it used stock prices and exchange rates from March 8 to make its calculations.
