Anyone involved in the rescue, recovery and cleanup efforts of the crash of United Flight 93 in Somerset County is invited to a meeting next month to learn about the Victim Compensation Fund and World Trade Center Health Program.

The town hall meeting is slated for Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. at the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department at 625 North St. Representatives from the assistance programs will be on hand to provide information and answer questions.

United Flight 93 crashed in a Stonycreek field during coordinated terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The site has turned into a national memorial honoring the 40 passengers and crew members aboard the airplane. Authorities believe they took a vote and fought back against their hijackers after learning of three other plane crashes that morning in New York City and at the Pentagon.

The health program allows for medical monitoring and treatment of people who responded to or survived the terrorist attacks. That means any first responder, volunteer or worker for a recovery or cleanup contractor who was at the Stonycreek site for at least four hours between the crash date and Oct. 3, 2001 could be eligible, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Victim Compensation Fund provides financial support for those who have experienced injuries, illnesses or deaths as a result of the attacks. Any responder or survivor — or family members of the deceased — at the site between the crash date and May 30, 2002 can apply.
