A super harvest moon to rise and dazzle viewers

On Nov. 14, 2016, a nearly full “super moon” rises above the Cathedral of Learning in Oakland.

No guarantees, but check out the moon Monday night.

It may be a harvest moon worthy of Neil Young.

The view depends on the weather and location, a National Weather Service meteorologist and a University of Pittsburgh astronomy professor told TribLive.

Barring an atmospheric anomaly, the moon should be visible because it’s a full moon that coincides with a time when the moon is closest to Earth, something called a supermoon.

The full moon closest to the autumnal equinox is also traditionally called a harvest moon because it could be bright enough for farmers to work through until moonrise.

The moon will be fullest at 11:48 p.m., but to most observers it should appear to be full throughout the evening, Pitt professor Carlos Badenes told TribLive.

While it’s cool to see non-astronomers excited about the cosmos, Badenes was wary of promising something superlative.

“Historically this kind of thing tends to disappoint people,” Badenes said.

But depending on conditions, it could be worth checking out, he said.

“The moon will be very pretty if it’s not cloudy,” he said.

Clouds will be thickening the later it gets, National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Bruby said.

“The earlier the better,” is what Bruby recommended for viewing.

The broadcast of Monday Night Football’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars could also offer views, and halftime could be a good time to step outside and check it out.

Taylor Swift fans also might be interested in checking out the football game, as her fiancé, Travis Kelce, is Kansas City’s tight end and she’s a burgeoning fan of the game. However, the Jacksonville media pegged the chance of a Swift spotting to be minimal.

Sunday also happens to be Kelce’s 35th birthday, increasing speculation that Swift may attend.
