After the national average price of gasoline fell below $4 per gallon late last week, the streak of falling gas prices is at risk of ending this week, an industry analyst said.
That’s because wholesale gasoline prices have increased some 40 cents per gallon as oil prices have rebounded, said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for price tracking service GasBuddy.
“That means the decline in average prices could wrap up soon, with some price increases possible as early as this week, especially in areas of the Great Lakes,” De Haan said. “While the West Coast and some areas of the Rockies may see prices continue to drift lower, I do believe the national average could tick higher this week as the better than expected jobs report last week likely means less demand destruction than anticipated.”
The national average dropped to $3.99 per gallon on Thursday, according to AAA. It had not been below $4 since March 5.
Oil prices spiked in the spring in reaction to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, leading the national average to an all-time high of about $5.02 on June 12, according to AAA.
The national average was about $3.96 on Monday, according to AAA. Averages ranged from about $3.46 in Texas up to about $5.37 in California.
The Pennsylvania average stands at $4.29, according to AAA. That’s down 78 cents from the state’s highest recorded average, $5.07, set on June 12.
Prices range from about $4.08 in Perry and Wyoming counties up to about $4.45 in Potter County.

According to GasBuddy, the Pittsburgh area average is $4.26 per gallon. That’s down 11 cents since last week and about 52 cents less than a month ago, but about 94 cents more than a year ago.
